4Rs Environmental Sustainability provides services to promote environmental care through the development of solutions, guidance, advisory services, and certification in sustainability, focusing on the reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery (4Rs) principles. It offers Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Services aimed at working with the environment to achieve sustainability in built environments. This includes ensuring environmental and sustainability certifications for built environments, such as the application of the LiderA system. The main service areas of 4Rs are LiderA certification, environmental sustainability, and sustainability management.

Evolution of the perspective on waste as a resource for sustainability

4Rs was founded in 1994 as a private limited company dedicated to environmental consulting and technical assistance for companies. It focuses on waste systems, including solutions for reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering materials and energy, viewing waste as a secondary resource. Over time, it expanded its scope to encompass the entire life cycle, contributing to the sustainability of organisations (in collaboration with the IPA), buildings, infrastructure, urban spaces, and other aspects of built environments.

From Green Buildings to the Sustainable Built Environments

The pursuit of good building performance has led to exploring ways to assess and demonstrate local integration, energy, materials, environmental loads, and comfort. Environmental assessment systems for buildings, such as BREEAM, LEED, and LiderA, have progressively developed. This focus has expanded to include the entire lifecycle, covering other ecological, social, and economic aspects—i.e., sustainability. Since 2000, the LiderA system has been developed and implemented to support guidance and demonstrate (certify) the pursuit of environmental performance and sustainability. The system offers a framework, guidance, and advice to achieve sustainability efficiently, based on the organisation’s ambition and proven financial capacity.

Value creating with partnerships

The 4Rs promotes partnerships with other entities to integrate complementary services within the value chain. In this context, it is worth mentioning the agreement with the LiderA System for management and certification, as well as with IPA – Innovation and Environmental Projects, Lda., to help integrate environment and sustainability into the decision-making and approval of Strategic Environmental Assessment (RAAE) plans, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) projects, Management Systems (SGA), as well as compliance assessments (Audits, Due Diligence) and performance evaluations in the pursuit of sustainability in investments and other sectors beyond the built environment. This also includes collaboration with universities (IST), research centres (CERIS), and training entities (FUNDEC).

A 4Rs, promove parcerias com outras entidades para integrar serviços que são complementares na cadeia de valor, neste âmbito é de referir o acordo com o Sistema LiderA para a gestão e certificação, bem como com a IPA – Inovação e projetos em Ambiente, Lda, para contribuir para integrar o ambiente e a sustentabilidade na decisão e aprovação dos planos Avaliação Ambiental Estratégica (RAAE), projetos Estudos de Impacte Ambiental (AIA), Sistemas de Gestão (SGA), bem como avaliação conformidade (Auditorias, Due Diligence) e do desempenho na procura de sustentabilidade nos investimentos e em outros sectores de atividades para além dos ambientes construídos. Insere-se neste contexto a colaboração com as universidades (IST), centros de investigação (CERIS), e entidades de formação (FUNDEC).

LiderA System

4Rs is responsible for managing the development, certification, and application of the LiderA system until 2030, including developing and ensuring sustainability guidance and certification throughout the planning, design, construction, and operation phases. It applies to various types (residential, tourism, services, commercial, mixed-use, infrastructure, and urban areas), as well as different scales (from house to site) and phases (design, construction, operation, and rehabilitation).
